Kenya to get next generation internet link
Written by Alex Singleton

Poor connections between Kenya’s internet and the internet at large are holding back the development of Kenya’s service sector. I’m told that Kenya relies on satellite for its internet links which means connections are slow, and with increasing reliance on internet infrastructure to provide voice calls, that’s a serious limitation. Kenya has great potential in the call centre business, especially as the Kenyan accent is flatter than the Indian accent, thought to make Kenyans able to compete well on quality.

There is the proposed East African Submarine cable System (EASSy) but because getting all the involved countries to agree on it means that it is not in Kenya’s interests to wait. When in Kenya recently I got views from people advising the government to go it alone. I was told that a Kenyan submarine cable could be done for under $200m, running from Kenya’s Mombasa to Fujairah in the Gulf of Oman.

So it’s nice to see that progress is happening. According to BBC News:

Kenya has said it will seek funding to finance its own undersea internet cable after an African joint venture was delayed by disagreements...

Officials said Kenya was keen to market itself as a centre for business outsourcing, as India has done.
