On Andrew Neil's Thursday night show This Week, former International Development Secretary Clare Short was upbeat about the future of China from a human rights point of view. She said that friends of hers in China tell her about how freedom has been increasing and that "There's a tension in the system." She said that the Chinese are committed to economic freedom, and that therefore the Chinese government would have no choice but to grant greater personal freedom. The next thirty years, she said, would be "fascinating to watch".
