Archbishop of Canterbury preaches on GI report

Posted on 9 August 2005

Archbishop of CanterburyThe Archbishop of Canterbury used a sermon in St Paul's Cathedral to discuss a Globalisation Institute report. He said (to the congregation who were there to celebrate 60 years of the NGO Christian Aid):

We have recently seen the publication of a very interesting report from the Globalisation Institute which is highly critical of the language of 'fair trade', arguing powerfully for free trade as the real engine of prosperity. There is a serious economic argument here.

Commenting on the sermon, Globalisation Institute president Alex Singleton said: "I'm delighted that the Church of England is starting to recognize that the debate is more complex than first imagined, and this sermon is an encouraging step. We look forward to future dialogue."

The Archbishop's remarks are discussed more fully here.
